How Hidden Valley Ranch turned fans into creators

By Sadie Dorf, Earned Social and Influencer Manager — Hidden Valley Ranch

Some marketing campaigns ask consumers to pay attention. Hidden Valley Ranch’s Ranchbassador program gave them a reason to participate.
Launched on National Ranch Day last March in celebration of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, the program set out to answer a simple question: what happens when one of America’s most iconic flavors meets the rest of the world?
We invited fans to apply for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel across Europe, put ranch to the ultimate food-pairing taste test and document their experiences with social content. The selected Ranchbassadors would spend seven weeks exploring multiple countries, sampling local cuisine and capturing authentic reactions as they shared what Hidden Valley Ranch called “The Flavor of America.”
A fan-driven movement takes off
The campaign quickly became a cultural moment for ranch fans. More than 6,000 people applied, turning a job posting into a phenomenon. Fans created dedicated social media accounts, organized campaigns and rallied supporters in hopes of landing one of the coveted spots. One applicant-generated campaign alone attracted hundreds of thousands of views and thousands of petition signatures. Long before any Ranchbassadors were selected, consumers were already creating content, building communities and spreading the word on the brand’s behalf.

For Katie and Lucas, the Ranchbassador experience was also a personal homecoming. The couple met while traveling abroad and fell in love exploring Europe together, making this summer’s adventure a natural next chapter in their story. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Katie met Lucas, a Santa Barbara native, while both were living and traveling overseas. Today, the pair share a passion for travel, food and storytelling, creating social content that captures the people, places and experiences they encounter along the way. Katie is currently studying documentary filmmaking and unscripted television at Chapman University, bringing a filmmaker’s eye to their content.
What made the journey especially meaningful was the opportunity to visit Lucas’ extended family in Italy, where many of his relatives, including his grandparents, still live. Together, they shared ranch with family members and documented authentic reactions, turning the program into both a cultural exchange and a personal family experience.

For longtime friends Spencer and John, the Ranchbassador program combined three of their favorite things: travel, storytelling and trying something new. Both seniors at Syracuse University, the pair first caught the travel bug while studying abroad in London. Outside the classroom, they create travel-focused content across social platforms, where they have built a combined audience of more than 1 million followers by capturing the excitement, spontaneity and unexpected moments that come with exploring new places.
Their adventurous spirit and proven ability to engage audiences made them a natural fit for the program, bringing fans along as they introduced ranch to new audiences and documented the surprises, laughs and discoveries they encountered across Europe.

Michael and Sophie approached the Ranchbassador journey through the lens of food. The couple first met on Season 14 of MasterChef, where Sophie finished among the competition’s top contestants and Michael ultimately earned the title. Since then, they’ve spent the past three years building a business centered on unique dining experiences and food-focused content. Along the way, the Ranchbassador experience became part of their own story when Michael proposed during the couple’s time in Greece
Despite their culinary expertise, the program marked a major first: neither had previously traveled beyond North America. As they explored Europe, they brought a chef’s curiosity and palate to every destination, renting kitchens along the way and reimagining local dishes with Hidden Valley Ranch. Their thoughtful approach to food storytelling helped audiences experience not just where they traveled, but how flavors, traditions and cultures came together on every plate.
Turning culinary adventures into authentic engagement
The Ranchbassadors blended travel, food and creator storytelling as they dipped, drizzled and dunked ranch with Europe’s favorite fare. Along the way, they explored local food traditions and sparked conversations around what happens when an unmistakably American flavor meets cuisines that may have never encountered it before. The result was a steady stream of entertaining, authentic content that invited fans to follow along from home. Check out glimpses from their European tour here.
By the end of the campaign, the Ranchbassador program generated more than 600 pieces of organic content and a vibrant community of fans eager to engage with the brand, tell their own stories and champion Hidden Valley Ranch in ways no traditional advertising campaign could replicate. This outcome reflects a broader shift in modern marketing, as consumers increasingly want to participate and shape their own brand experiences.
Rewarding fandom beyond the Ranchbassadors

Recognizing the enthusiasm surrounding the program, the team surprised approximately 1,200 applicants who didn’t get the gig with Hidden Valley Ranch kits, turning hopeful candidates into even deeper brand advocates left with a positive brand memory. Those moments of recognition inspired additional organic sharing across social channels and helped keep excitement high throughout the summer.
By rewarding fans, empowering creators and giving people a story worth talking about, Hidden Valley Ranch transformed passionate consumers into active participants. The campaign demonstrates the power of meeting consumers where culture is happening and creating experiences that earn attention rather than simply buying it. It’s a strong example of how Clorox brands are building deeper connections with consumers through social-first storytelling, creator partnerships and community-driven engagement that extends far beyond the initial campaign.
