Mark Smerznak on leading innovation beyond the Lab

What does it take to grow from a technical expert into an enterprise leader?

In a recent profile by the Innovation Research Interchange’s Shaping Innovation Leaders program, Chief R&D Officer Mark Smerznak reflected on more than 30 years of global research and development leadership and the lessons he has learned along the way. From building innovation capabilities around the world to leading Clorox’s global R&D organization, his insights demonstrate how curiosity, breadth and collaboration can turn technical expertise into enterprise impact.

“Successful leaders expand their perspective beyond their own expertise, enabling them to navigate constant change and make better decisions for the business,” Mark noted in the interview.

While Mark’s experiences span industries, functions and geographies, his perspective is grounded in four ideas that have guided his career and leadership philosophy:

Build breadth alongside expertise.

Deep technical knowledge matters, but effective leaders also develop an understanding of adjacent functions, markets and perspectives. That broader view helps them connect the dots across R&D, manufacturing, consumer insights, commercial strategy and finance to make stronger business decisions.

Make smart innovation choices.

Innovation requires balancing investment in the core business with adjacent opportunities and transformational ideas. Improving efficiency, increasing speed and applying capabilities such as digital tools and AI can create room to pursue future growth.

Enable others to succeed.

As careers progress, success becomes less about solving every problem yourself and more about developing talent, removing barriers and helping teams work effectively together.

Stay close to consumers.

Meaningful innovation begins with understanding the people it serves. By challenging assumptions, asking thoughtful questions and remaining open to learning, leaders can identify opportunities that are both technically feasible and genuinely valuable.
