"I'm a Generalist with skills in various aspects of HR, " says Charles.
In his current role, Charles is gaining experience providing, "strategic HR support to the CIO and the senior leadership of the Information Services function."
A past recipient of the Clorox HR Business Partner Award of Excellence, Charles concludes that HR Managers "need to look beyond HR issues and build an understanding of the business. Become someone who can analyze data, make recommendations and communicate the short and long-term implications, both people and financial, of the options." Why? "So you can participate in business discussions and decision-making from more than just an HR perspective."
HR Managers face difficult challenges. "Whether it's a choice between developing skills internally or acquiring them externally or weeks-long union negotiations to reach an agreement that both management and labor can live with, you must weigh individual versus business needs," he says.
Bottom line? Before prescribing solutions, Charles says his job is to ask, "Is this the best choice for this company and our people? Is it in keeping with our values? Is it the right thing to do?"
